Whitecroft Lighting's new DUO luminaire embraces new technologies and innovations to address the visual needs of the workspace and create a greatly improved working environment. DUO's revolutionary Bio Dynamic lighting system gradually varies both lighting intensity and colour temperature throughout the working day to counteract the peaks and troughs in alertness that most people experience through the day.At the heart of DUO lies Whitecroft's unique Micro Polymer optical technology, using a complex polycarbonate material that combines microscopic pearls of opal thermoplastic elements in a clear base, resulting in excellent light transmission. This microstructure refracts light to such an extent that it appears translucent and delivers an extremely diffuse effect. This differs dramatically from traditional diffuser materials which are completely opal, resulting in extremely poor light transmission.
DUO also employs Intermediate Brightness Zone (IBZ) technology to create a graduated brightness between the high intensity of a light source and the relatively low luminance of the ceiling. The complex structure of the IBZ polycarbonate material produces a highly diffuse light with constant brightness from all angles of view. This intermediate brightness helps the human eye adapt to the differing brightness within the field of view.
Perceived brightness as registered by the human eye differs greatly from that measured by a light meter and peak intensities (such as those commonly associated with T5 lamps and louvred fittings) can cause severe discomfort. DUO's unique IBZ technology diffuses brightness across the entire optic eliminating visual discomfort whilst greatly contributing to the perceived ceiling brightness. Thanks to the innovative combination of unique micro polymer optics, and controlled brightness zone technology, Whitecroft's DUO creates bright room surfaces in line with those demanded by LG7. For maximum design flexibility, the fitting has either central or side optic versions, which can be micropolymer pods, living louvres or semi spec louvres, all of which are available in 600 x 600mm or 1200 x 300mm. DUO not only maximises the visual aspects of the lit environment but also addresses the emotional and biological requirements of the people in that environment.
Whitecroft's DUO is also available with built-in LED elements for creating dramatic effects. For example, coloured LED elements can be used to ‘floodlight' the building from inside creating a dramatic visual statement. Consuming only 9W, this is a more sustainable alternative to conventional floodlighting. LEDs can also be supplied in corporate colours, for aiding navigation or to enhance architectural features. The entire DUO range has air handling capabilities and will adapt to fit all common UK ceiling types.
