Addressing the increasing energy crisis and the demand for electronic control gear in street lighting, Holophane Europe has introduced the QSSTM street lantern, designed specifically for use with electronic gear, photocells and monitoring system components. The unique, IP66 QSSTM luminaire eliminates the problem of premature thermal failure through the innovative Q-CoolTM thermal management system. The integral Q-CoolTM system houses the control gear in a thermally sealed IP65 compartment, separate from the lamp and optic. This compartment incorporates fins to dissipate heat through convection, as well as additional aluminium elements to act as heat sinks. As a result, the control gear within the QSSTM will not exceed the recommended case temperature, even with HID lamps.
Typically, the Q-CoolTM compartment will maintain the temperature of control gear at 10°C below the maximum case temperature, and this brings additional benefits in terms of longer life for the control gear. The Q-CoolTM compartment has also been designed with remote monitoring devices in mind, providing ample space for these additional components to be included in the luminaire if required. Consequently, the QSSTM is 'future-ready' for remote monitoring systems that are proving beneficial for reducing the maintenance costs of street lighting.
Experience shows that use of electronic gear with inappropriate luminaires can lead to premature failure of the control gear due to overheating. This places a considerable maintenance burden on local authorities seeking to improve the performance of their street lighting through the use of modern control gear. To cater for the varying requirements of local authorities, a range of photocell options, ranging from various miniature photocells to NEMA, are available.
For ease of maintenance, Holophane has also developed Q-TrayTM. The clip-in Q-TrayTM allows easy, tool-free control gear maintenance for conventional control gear, providing significant time and cost savings. Trials have shown that control gear can be replaced within 30 seconds, even under onerous field conditions – providing time savings of at least 75% compared to conventional designs.
When used with electronic control gear, the gear tray is fixed to the luminaire body with two screws to allow good thermal dissipation of heat.
Another innovation of the QSSTM luminaire is the new Q-SafeTM optic, which provides efficient photometric performance, ease of maintenance and unparalleled vandal resistance. QSSTM is the smallest member of the Holophane QSTM street lighting range and combines a contemporary style with a choice of light distributions and lamp types to suit a wide range of applications. With no upward light, QSSTM conforms to dark sky requirements, while providing precise, controllable light distribution to save energy and reduce light wastage and spillage.
Q-SafeTM has been designed to accommodate the latest lamps, including compact fluorescent and the brand new CosmoPolis lamp range from Philips. For quick access the complete Q-SafeTM optic can also be removed without the use of tools, through a simple spring clip action. Q-SafeTM also features a vibration-free twist-lock lampholder for lamp replacement, whilst the IP669 optic assembly offers total weather protection and maximum protection against vandalism with 20 Joule shock resistance, which is particularly important for lower mounting heights.
In the development of QSSTM all issues of modern 'Group B' street lighting requirements have been accounted for. These include the illuminance lighting requirements prescribed in the new BS5498 2003 standard, especially for S Class, ES Class, EV Class and CE Class requirements - but it also performs extremely well to ME Class (luminance) standards.
In addition, the lantern fully complies with the WEEE Directive, using recyclable materials such as marine grade LM6 aluminium and glass.
QSSTM luminaires are available with two enclosures; curved glass and a low profile polycarbonate bowl. The polycarbonate bowl allows wider spacings and even greater vandal resistance, while the glass enclosure offers improved efficiency, lower perceived glare, no UV degradation and extended maintenance cycles.
QSSTM is the latest addition to the popular QSTM street lighting range, which includes QSMTM, the medium sized lantern and QSLTM, the largest member of the family. The versatility of this range provides designers with the opportunity to choose the best solution to fit each project.
