Two new families of LED luminaires – Band and Plane – have been launched by Thorn to help lighting designers create magical atmospheres in towns and cities. Having developed optical systems which optimise the light output and uniformity of LED light sources, Thorn asked 'light sculptor' Patrick Rimoux to design a series of fittings. He came up with two designs.
Firstly, a linear luminaire for ground recessed guidance and façade applications. "Band is a metre long one dimensional row of LEDs emitting a razor sharp light, ideal for illuminating walls", says Rimoux. With its asymmetrical reflector and wide range of colour options, including RGB versions, the IP67 rated Band provides superb uniform illumination with no flame effect.
Rimoux next turned his attention to ground and wall recessed guidance and sequence lighting using an array of LEDs to produce a selection of modular fittings - rather like illuminated paving stones or tiles. Rimoux adds "Plane is a two dimensional luminaire defining shape and form to suit the environment, creating colourful rectangles of light." Sizes range from 140mm square to 1000mm x 600mm.
