With one eye on the past and one on the future, Fagerhult has developed Pozzo. A daylight simulating two-in-one lighting system that allows flexibility within a space without compromising on light quality.
We need daylight to live. It governs every aspect of our lives and enables us to see. It makes us feel good and is an essential part of the architectural experience. Even so, in many buildings – both old and new – there are restrictions on how much natural light penetrates the shell. The experience of daylight has to be created in other ways. Up to now, lighting planners have been forced to cheat the daylight effect and choose between two different types of solution: either a deeply recessed light fitting that channels the light downwards or a large-format suspended ceiling system to create the impression of a skylight. Pozzo is unique in the way it combines these two solutions without compromising on the technical light qualities of the luminaire. While inspiration has been taken from the classical architectural masters and their solutions using light shafts and lanterns, the technology is brand new.
"Our aim has been to give architects and lighting planners greater freedom. Pozzo has an adjustable diffuser which quickly and smoothly transforms the system from a light shaft to a large-format fitting," explains Fagerhult's product manager, Håkan Johansson.
"The system comes in three different sizes and three models, including two that have a reflector which supplement the ambient lighting with a higher proportion of direct lighting. With a multitude of permutations and a quick changeovers time, Pozzo creates the ability to adapt your lighting from one day to the next. It allows you to create new spaces inside spaces."
Pozzo is characterised by a well-balanced opacity and evenness in luminance, while the efficiency is uncommonly high for this type of lighting system. Most of the models in the Pozzo family fulfil EN12464-1 requirements.
Pozzo, which means 'well' or 'shaft' in Italian, brings a small piece of the natural sky to the room, without dazzling the onlooker. Concealed yet never completely shielded, it gives the eye a fixed reference point and the potential to adapt the lighting in different zones.
A chamfer in the shade reinforces the effect at the sides of the shaft, creating a soft transition to the ceiling. Pozzo is deigned to be recessed in a suspended ceiling, The models are Pozzo I, with a circular T5-C light source, and the Pozzo II FSQ and Pozzo II MT, which both have a reflector.
