Tridonic's DALI Ballasts Enhance Flexible Lighting Design

Tridonic has supplied around 3,000 dimmable DALI ballasts via Luminaire UK for use at Birmingham City Council's new Woodcock Street office development in Aston. The ballasts are incorporated into luminaires to provide a versatile interface with the lighting management system.

Comprising five floors with 22,000 sq. m of office accommodation, it will house over 3,000 council workers. Sustainability is at the heart of its BREEAM Excellent design and the lighting management makes a key contribution to this, along with other initiatives such as CHP, rainwater harvesting and brown roofs.

Installed and specified by Birmingham based Luminaire UK, the Tridonic ballasts are being used in conjunction with 2 x 49W T5 lighting in open plan areas, along with a range of other T5 and compact fluorescent light sources. Tridonic has also supplied all of the emergency lighting control gear.

A key element of the lighting design is flexible control, as the workspaces include a combination of fixed workstations and ‘touchdown' areas, so that occupancy will vary considerably. Thanks to the Tridonic DALI interface, the lighting is fully integrated with occupancy sensors throughout the building, so that lighting is only turned on when required. Daylight sensors are also used in luminaires close to windows so that the lighting can be dimmed in relation to natural daylight levels.

The result is a versatile lighting system that fully exploits the characteristics of the DALI interface to adapt to changing occupancy and daylight levels and ensure that the lighting operates with maximum efficiency.
