Emergency Lighting Producers Prepare for the Battery Regulations

Lumicom Limited, the established WEEE compliance scheme for producers of non-household lighting equipment, is helping its members prepare for the new Battery Regulations which come into force on 1st January 2010.
The Regulations divide batteries into three categories: automotive batteries, industrial batteries and portable batteries. Producers of industrial batteries are required to put a disposal infrastructure in place and announce how the scheme will work by 1st December 2009. It is the Members who place packs of industrial nickel cadmium (NiCd) and emergency lighting equipment on the UK market who are governed by the regulations and are required to provide a take back service for discarded industrial batteries.
Lumicom has produced an information pack to assist members meet their disposal obligations and is also exploring other options to help guide members through the implementation of the new Regulations. Producers of industrial batteries who are also involved in the production of lighting fixtures are also being encouraged to join the Lumicom scheme so they can benefit from the support and advice on offer.
