Innovative new Fusion street lighting from WRTL Exterior Lighting Ltd using full spectrum 'white' light has been chosen by residents in Kentish Town for a Camden Borough Council refurbishment project. Fusion Type 1 lanterns from the modular range were selected as their traditional 'turn of the century' appearance complements the surrounding architecture.Eric Blakeman, lighting engineer for Camden Borough Council, commented: "The residents are delighted with the new lighting in their streets. It was very important for them to have input into the work done on their neighbourhood, and for white lighting to be used; it makes the locality feel much brighter and safer. The Fusion lanterns combine good looks with outstanding performance."
Camden Borough Council wished to replace aging lighting along Lupton Street, Raveley Street, Ospring Road and Lady Margaret Road, as part of a Home Zone scheme which aims to promote a more 'neighbourly' feel in residential streets. So that residents could pick their favourite, the Council installed four different types of street lighting for a three-month trial period, after which Fusion emerged as the clear winner.
60 Type 1 Fusion lanterns have now been installed on existing columns, with 100W CDM-TT (full spectrum) lamps to align with the Council's policy of installing white lighting throughout the Borough. White lighting is preferred by local communities as it ensures the natural appearance of colours and has been shown to enhance the lit environment for an added sense of security.
An initiative of the Department for Transport, Home Zone schemes promote the sharing of road space by motor vehicles and other road users, while also accommodating residents needs. By introducing features such as traffic calming, benches, play areas, landscaping and shared spaces, Home Zones are designed to make drivers naturally drive more slowly and carefully and promote the road space for social activities and children's play.
