Concord Tees off New 2010 Ryder Cup

Concord Tees off New 2010 Ryder Cup
The Celtic Manor Resort, situated in the beautiful Usk Valley in Wales, is due to host the 38th Ryder Cup in 2010 on a newly designed course, specially built for this inspiring event. The £16 million investment in the Twenty Ten Course also involved the construction of a luxurious new Clubhouse. Working with lighting design consultants, White Young Green of Cardiff, Concord Lighting provided a number of luminaires for the entrance/ reception area and exterior spaces.

Probably the most notable and prominent light fittings in the entire building are the series of Limburg Cylinder pendants, which grace the entrance hall/ reception area. There are three pendant units arranged in row, each one comprising a cluster of three luminaires with 36W Lynx L TC-L lamps controlled by electronic ballasts. The luminaire is available in four lengths – the longest (550mm) version is used here – and the diffusers are made from hand-blown, three-ply glass, in which a wafer-thin opalised glass is enclosed between two crystal glass layers. This produces a highly translucent but opaque effect, while distributing the light in a soft, uniform manner.

Outside the building, Sylvania Palmyra D290 ground-recessed uplighters, with 70W HSI-T metal halide lamps, are used to wash the exterior of the Clubhouse itself and the low walls around the car park. These are constructed in die-cast aluminium – and have anodised aluminium reflectors offering a medium-beam distribution. Their 10mm toughened glass cover can withstand a vehicle weight of 3.5 tons at 30km/h.

Elsewhere on the exterior walls of the Clubhouse, the designers have specified two Simes light fixtures. Wall-mounted, bi-directional versions of the Simes Mega Slot luminaire, with two HIT-CRI 150W lamps, provide powerful up-down illumination of the walls and surrounding space. Their die-cast and extruded aluminium housings, with powder paint finish, and 12mm toughened clear glass lenses, offer high durability. More low-key lighting effects are created by a series of Simes Brique rectangular fittings, with 18W TC-D lamps, on the lower walls. These have black die-cast and extruded aluminium housings and toughened opal glass diffusers.
