UK airports are currently undergoing a wave of expansions and refurbishments – and none more so than the East Midlands Airport (EMA), Derbyshire. Owned by the Manchester Airports Group, the country's largest British-owned airport operator, the airport handles approximately five million passengers each year, flying to more than 100 destinations. To help EMA hold on to its clutch of recent awards, including Airport of the Year 2007 (British Travel Awards), the airport recently undertook an extension and refurbishment programme, helped and supported by a number of lighting products from Concord Lighting.
Energy saving was a major part of the lighting brief, therefore most of the fittings are controlled with PIR presence detectors and/ or photo-cell control for daylight linking.
Much of the remodelling of the airport revolved around the construction of the new Western Pier, which will substantially increase the number of departure gates, and flights, at EMA. Working closely with electrical contractors Frederick Lambs Ltd, Concord supplied a number of different luminaires for the Western Pier itself -- Ovation 65 direct-indirect 54W and 80W suspension fittings, Cassini wall lights and LED 100TE 42W IP44 Prismatic downlights. The same downlights were also installed in the Sky Walkway link building.
Both floors of the IDL (International Departure Lounge) link building are illuminated with suspended 80W Ovation 65 luminaires.
Finally, a range of Concord products were used to illuminate the new Bus Interchange, to help create a welcoming area, with shops & cafes, in which to wait for transfer buses, taxis etc. The internal lighting of the Bus Interchange, and adjacent ‘meeters and greeters' space, comprises of 42W LED 100TE downlights with Opal Drop Rings, 55W Equilibro with a central drop basket, Myriad 50 spotlights with glow ring and 28W Sterling Bulkhead wall mounted luminaires.
