Roblon Fibre Optics, supplied by the Light Projects Group, has been used to form a stunning effect at the O2, the refurbished former Millennium Dome in London.Designed by Cory Berhost, M E Engineers, Roblon Fibre Optics were used throughout the Indigo VIP Lounge to enhance the unique space, the centrepiece of which is a stunning three-metre diameter ‘grass-skirt' chandelier consisting of 4,000 no. metre long cracked side-glow glass fibre all of which are powered by 9 x 150watt projectors controlled on a dimmable, colour change DMX programme.
In addition, five low voltage projectors are used to power 200 individual light points in frost glass fittings. These hold together the seating banquettes in two smaller padded lounges. The entrance to the lounge is via a tensioned blue fabric tunnel, the ribs of which using fibre optic spotlights powered using 12 x 150watt DMX controlled projectors.
Finally a range of Roblon's BeeSpot surface mounted fibre optic spotlights are used throughout the space to highlight points of interest and to enhance the atmospheric conditions within the zone.
Because the lounge is mainly enclosed by fabric, heat from the light fittings was seen as an issue. This is where fibre optics come into their own. The fibre does not carry current, making it safe to use in all kinds of delicate or hazardous situations. The light produced at the end of the optic cable is cool and creates no IR or UV radiation so it can be sited close to the flammable materials and is perfect for close proximity illuminations.
