Probably the UK's biggest single public lighting order has been placed by SEC (Southern Electric Contracting) with WRTL Exterior Lighting Ltd for the Newcastle and North Tyneside PFI, using the Arc 80 lantern. The supply of lanterns is worth £6 million over a five year period; WRTL's Arc 80 was selected after extensive lantern trials against stiff competition from major international lighting manufacturers. Stewart Franklin of SEC commented: "The outstanding durability and lantern performance of the Arc was a winning factor. In addition, WRTL understand fully the needs of a large installing contractor working on a 25 year PFI project and their very comprehensive bid demonstrated this.
Our design consultants Eclipse Partners technically approved the Arc lantern."

WRTL's aluminium bodied Arc 80 will be fitted with a curved glass bowl, finished in black and complete with a fitted 150W SON-T lamp, cable and NEMA socket. The ARC is being factory-configured to lampholder setting 1D, which will comply with both S2 and S3 lighting codes. The package was developed for rapid installation and minimum site work.
N.B. WRTL's vandal-resistant, curved glass bowl Arc units are available in two sizes, and are compatible with a wide range of sodium and full spectrum lamps, giving visual uniformity in all road types. The aluminium castings utilise WRTL's long experience in marine lighting where long, corrosion-free life is paramount. In addition, Arc is almost completely recyclable to meet future recycling requirements, making it future proof from this perspective.
The stylish ARC has specially designed, high performance optics offering excellent uniformity, a key factor in any lighting design. In addition, ARC has double ingress protection with the entire body sealed to IP 66 and the optic sealed separately. In order to avoid any potential for a build-up of condensation after lamp heating and cooling, both compartments feature controlled breathing technology (CBT). Safe access to the inside of the body is assisted by an auto-disconnect facility.
