Zumtobel gets up close and personal at Nanotechnology Centre

Innovative, bespoke lighting from Zumtobel is providing premium working conditions for staff at the London Centre for Nanotechnology.

Bringing together two of the world's leading institutions, University College London (UCL) and Imperial College London, the centre occupies a purpose-built eight storey facility in Bloomsbury. Operating at the forefront of science and technology the state-of- the-art laboratories enable research into the increasingly important field of nanotechnology.

Due to the microscopic nature of the work, it is essential that the lighting throughout the centre provides the best possible working conditions whilst motivating and enhancing staff performance. TECTON, a continuous row lighting system, forms the basis of the lighting scheme throughout the centre. It dispenses light evenly to create a comfortable environment, and this flexibility combined with its slim lines and discreet understated style means it is the perfect solution for the modern workplace.

Designed by Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, the adaptable trunking system enables data cables, power supplies and lighting control systems to be neatly incorporated into the system and tapped off at any point. Emergency lighting supply or monitoring cables can also be accommodated, eliminating the requirements for additional systems.

The TECTON system is complemented perfectly by a number of other Zumtobel fittings, including LIGHTFIELDS, KAVA and ARCADE luminaires to perpetuate the stimulating atmosphere. The ARCADE spotlights provide excellent variability and functionality, as they can be positioned horizontally as a downlight/uplight as well as a vertical wallwasher, whilst the small design allows them to blend into the architecture. KAVA, a recessed wall luminaire breaks up the geometric vertical surfaces of the offices and labs. Providing an asymmetrical light distribution, the matt glass lamp guard makes it impossible to see the lamp, creating refreshing lighting effects on the floor and ceiling.

The wide range of luminaires and innovative technology provide a welcoming and bright working environment and Zumtobel's in-house technical advisors were able to offer a bespoke solution that provides optimum lighting and stimulation for the staff whilst ensuring integration between the appearance of the fittings and the smooth lines of the building.
