LEDs bridge time and space

LEDs bridge time and space
A red beam stretches along the Stone Bridge across the River Danube. It provides a visual link between the two banks and at the same time highlights the historical development of Regensburg and one of city's oldest structures. The City of Regensburg wants to emphasise its application to be named the City of Culture 2010 with this unusual lighting installation by Osram Opto Semiconductors.

The central theme of Regensburg's application to become the City of Culture 2010 is a "bridge between two worlds". As one of the most significant historical structures, the Stone Bridge is better qualified than any other structure to present this message. For six weeks until end of June a red line of 21,900 light emitting diodes stretches brightly across the bridge, emphasising the link between the two banks of the Danube. Each light emitting diode stands for one month since the city was founded in the year 179 AD. Short white vertical lines of light at irregular intervals mark important events in the city's history. The many dots of light therefore provide a kind of time line for the city. Soft coloured light is used to illuminate the arches from below and enhance the visual impact. The light provides a link through time and space, pointing the way from the past to the future.

Behind this impressive lighting installation from Osram Light Consulting is ultra-modern LED technology, combined with high-intensity floodlights. The light emitting diodes are distributed among 40 Linearlight-Flex modules in red and white. Linearlight-Flex are LED modules consisting of a number of light emitting diodes and appropriate current controllers. Seven Powerlux spotlights from Osram provide soft light from below. Modern lighting technology is being used with great effect to illuminate centuries of history.
