TridonicAtco Helps Tesco Become More Energy Efficient
DSI SMART multi detectors from TridonicAtco have played a prominent role in Whitecroft Lighting's versatile and energy efficient lighting system for the sales floor of the Tesco store in Gloucester. Working closely with the Tesco design team, a scheme was devised that would meet all of the requirements of the project, including the required illuminances of 900 lux during trading hours and 300 lux for shelf filling and cleaning.

Tesco at Gloucester Business Park is a new development that opened in October 2006. It has a retail area of 5,574m2 (60,000ft2) and required a lighting system that would enhance the shoppers' experience and show goods off to best effect, while providing Tesco with significant savings in running costs.

Several zones are controlled using two DSI SMART multi detectors linked to TridonicAtco DSI V/T amplifiers and each DSI SMART has been programmed with either a trading or stocking level. Simply switching between the two allows Tesco greater flexibility of control and energy saving.

In order to provide a high level of zoned control 16 of the fittings were designated as 'Master' luminaires – each fitted with two light sensors and additional switching relays. Each master luminaire is connected to a number of 'Slave' luminaires, the exact number varying to suit each space, to create 16 separate control zones. Using its integral sensors and switching relays, each master luminaire is able to independently control the light levels in specific zones in response to natural daylight levels and the time of day.

Each DSI SMART regulated the light between a set pre-programmed light value and the minimum value of the ballast. Therefore during the day the ambient light in the store was regulated in line with the daylight entering the store. During the evening or when the store is closed the second sensor is switched in at a much lower dimmed value and the overall lighting level within the building is reduced to give a level suitable for shelf stacking and cleaning.

The chosen solution uses specially adapted Aerial luminaires from Whitecroft, modified from the standard product, each luminaire fitted with either 6x or 4x 80W T5 fluorescent lamps, as well as DSI (digital serial interface) dimming control gear, integral panel plugs, connection leads and suspension.

The DSI SMART solution from TridonicAtco was chosen because of its simplicity of design and installation. As an independent controls solution each zone within the store is separately controlled and, as such, is free of over sophisticated management. The DSI solution unique to TridonicAtco's PCA ECO ballast provides the perfect partner for true digital lighting management.
