A private house has been transformed into a stunning contemporary home with both lighting design and products by John Cullen Lighting winning the Residential Award at the National Lighting Design Awards 2006.Layering low voltage, mains voltage and fibre optic light sources allowed the lighting to provide the background atmosphere while respecting the traditional architectural layout.
Discreet low voltage spots (Polestar's from John Cullen Lighting) were used throughout to wall wash, pinpoint tables, add highlight to niches and to light art work opening out the narrow or dark spaces. These also serve to draw the eye through a space and provide dramatic pockets of light beyond an immediate area.
Low level Sirolo wall recessed floor washers from John Cullen Lighting skimmed pools of light onto textured flooring and on to steps and stairs acting as a subtle route path as well as providing a low level layer of night light. Low glare floor recessed Columini uplights from John Cullen Lighting skim up columns for dramatic night time impact.
Mains voltage Lightstream lighting from John Cullen Lighting is integrated into the scheme using a linear light source around coving in living areas and bathrooms coupled with floor standing lamps and table lamps to provide essential warm light.
A stunning colour change fibre optic edge lit waterfall provided the focal point through the ground floor of the house which when lit can be seen throughout the length of the ground floor. The waterfall was textured allowing the water to grip the surface and carry different hues of light to alter the mood from soft and warm to a cooler more contemporary aqua blue. This also provides a dramatic backdrop to the dining area below seen through the glass floored deck area in front of the waterfall.
White light fibre optics were also sprinkled through planted grass on a stairwell wall to provide depth and texture using the play of light and shadow as a counterpoint to a contemporary glass balustrade. Fibres were also used to skim light over a white pebbled floor to enhance a Russian themed wine cellar.
Edge lit shelving provided visual interest in bookcases and storage areas in the study and dressing areas providing a wraparound light. This eliminated the need for additional light, also freeing up floor space from the additional clutter of floor standing lights.
Bathrooms were treated to a mixture of low voltage directional Polestar spots and concealed lighting. This was either using a warm mains voltage linear Lightstream source in coving and or a low voltage Lightstream linear concealed light source to wash floors and act as night lights.
Crestron automated touch control allows for all areas to be compartmentalised depending on the requirement for use creating a flexible and easy to use lighting scheme.
