A comprehensive range of luminaires from Whitecroft Lighting has been used to provide cost–effective and energy–efficient lighting at the new Bristol Bus Station. The brief from the owners of First Bus in Bristol was to create an interior similar to that of an airport terminal and provide a new transport hub for the region. Whitecroft could fulfil all of the luminaire types that had been chosen for the project and deliver on time, which resulted in its products being used throughout the project, from the bus bays to the kitchen and cafeteria. The bus station is part of the £45m Avon and Somerset Magistrates' Court PFI project.
Whitecroft was early involved in the design of the bus station and was able to offer a wide range of luminaires to meet the client's requirements for low energy and ease of maintenance. Whitecroft products used on the project include Espirit compact fluorescent downlighters, with a clip attachment to provide IP44 protection, for lighting the concourse, and Trimpak T5 fluorescent battens for the pelmet lighting. The bus and coach bays have been lit using Whitecroft Spectre IP65 downlighters to meet the required illuminance levels with the minimum number of fittings, thus providing savings on installation and maintenance costs. Cascade recessed fluorescent luminaires have been installed in the office areas whilst, in the kitchen and cafeteria areas, sealed modular Hygiene recessed fittings have been used to combine energy efficiency with ease of cleaning.
The new 80 X 40 meters building is a vast improvement on the old bus station and commuters are already reaping the benefits of the improved facilities.
