Whitecroft Range Suits State of the Art Leisure Centre

Whitecroft Range Suits State of the Art Leisure Centre
A comprehensive range of luminaires from Whitecroft Lighting have been used to provide cost-effective, energy efficient lighting at the new K2 leisure centre in Crawley, Sussex.

K2 is Crawley Council's new state-of-the-art leisure centre, which opened in November 2005, offering over 40 sports and leisure activities. Facilities include a fitness centre, the only 50m swimming pool in the South East, a 12m climbing wall, a gymnasium, squash courts, indoor bowls rinks, steam and sauna rooms, a selection of multi-use spaces and a café/bar area.

The building is constructed of high quality and sustainable materials and designed to ensure it is easy to maintain and adaptable. It uses a combined heat and power system, is well insulated and makes use of natural ventilation.

Lighting throughout the centre also had to comply with the client's requirements for energy efficiency and low cost of ownership. Whitecroft products were chosen for high quality and competitive pricing.

Kevin Stephenson of the project's M&E contractor EMCOR Engineering Services commented. "Whitecroft was able to offer a wide range of luminaires to suit all of the different areas in the centre, while also meeting the client's requirements for low energy and ease of maintenance," he added.

Whitecroft worked closely with the design team on the selection and positioning of luminaires, for both interior and exterior lighting. Emergency lighting has been incorporated into a number of the luminaires to arrive at an aesthetically consistent solution throughout.

Whitecroft products used on the project include a combination of surface mounted and recessed Serve luminaires in the main sports hall, gymnasium and squash courts, along with Cascade, Compass, Torque and Esprit in general areas, changing rooms and toilets. Broadspread Conforma luminaires have been used in the bowls hall and squash viewing areas to meet the required illuminance levels with the minimum number of fittings, thus providing savings on installation and maintenance costs.

In food preparation areas, sealed, modular Hygiene recessed fittings have been used to combine energy efficiency with ease of cleaning.

Whitecroft also provided exterior lighting to the facility, including ACDF durable, surface mounted luminaires in the running track seating areas and Euroflood spotlights to provide good visibility on access routes to the centre.
