Underwood West School has risen from the ashes

Underwood West School has risen from the ashes
Following an arson attack, which destroyed the original school, a delightfully colourful and friendly new building has been created on the existing floor slab. This child oriented infant's school has been entered for the RIBA North West brochure by Cheshire County Council and the second phase, consisting of a Sure Start Nursery School is now underway.

The light and airy atmosphere has been achieved using the slender and elegant 5261 by Trilux Lighting. The challenge caused by the varied heights and slopping plains of the ceilings were overcome by using the direct/indirect fixture in both suspended and close-ceiling mounted versions. Highly efficient compact fluorescent downlighters have been used in areas with lower ceiling heights. The circular 128/29 Series ties in with the porthole type internal windows enhancing the nautical theme of the school. All the rooms are named after different parts of a boat – even down to the Captain's Cabin!

The architect Atkins wanted all the rooms to be naturally lit by daylight, but to keep the same effect during the darker hours. The carefully engineered optical performance of the 5261 has created an even spread of light across the ceiling and all the vertical surfaces aiding the illusion of a bright day lit space.
