i-Vision has supplied Norwegian lighting design and installation company Oslo Lysdesign with a mixture of their Lumos LED products for several high profile hotel projects, including for the conference rooms at the newly refurbished Royal Christiana Hotel in Oslo.Oslo Lysdesign's Gier Ove Langlo – one of the country's leading lighting design consultants - was asked to design and specify a new scheme for the conference spaces by hotel group Choice Hotels, of which the Christiana is a new flagship venue.
The main conference space is a large area with sliding room dividers that break it down into three smaller spaces as required. Lenglo wanted a reliable, low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing solution to introduce dynamic ambient lighting into the environment.
After speaking to i-Vision's Dave Mackay, he decided to illuminate the paths of these dividing walls from below with Lumos in-ground Spots. Around the sides of the whole room, he chose to light from the top down, using 58 of i-Vision's Lumos 3 fittings as down-lighters.
In the foyer outside, he ensconced 26 Lumos 1200 mm LED strip fixtures into the roof soffits, to create a complementary "walk in" state for those arriving for events in the conference rooms.
Beneath the stairs in the foyer, a series of 6 x Lumos 3 in-ground simple colour change units are placed. The design is completed with ceiling mounted cold white Lumos 3's lighting the white frosted doors to the conference suite entrance. The same units are also used in an adjacent ante-room used for refreshments - effectively replacing all other white light with the Lumos units.
"I chose Lumos for many reasons" states Langlo, "It provided an ideal and very flexible method for changing the lighting settings and levels throughout, plus the usual energy saving and long lamp life attributes of LED". He tried many other products head-to-head before making his final decision, but "none of them were as bright as the Lumos" he concludes.
Driving Force
All the Lumos products featured at the Hotel Christiana utilise I-Vision's new optimised LED Driver - Lumos Drive 216. This makes installation quicker, is more user friendly and easier to programme than the previous drivers available. It is compact, lightweight, multi-functional, highly specified and lowers the total cost of each LED fitting.
The lighting is zoned into three sections, controlled via a Sunlight interface offering 8 pre-set programmes for each of the three areas.
Northern Lights
Langlo is also doing plenty of work elsewhere in Norway with Lumos fixtures.
He's finding the MR16 replacement units extremely popular in a wide variety of venues. Meanwhile in Bergen, he's just finished the lighting design for a popular new club, Mood, which also makes good use of Lumos fittings. The Britannia Hotel in Trondheim features Lumos 3 products with 60 degree lenses, used for washing walls and floors. In Sunne, Sweden, there's 43 Lumos 3's installed in the ceiling, illuminating the reception, plus 7 Lumos Flood 36s and sixteen 1200 mm strips for the stairs.
