New Lighting Saves Energy for London Bridge Station

New Lighting Saves Energy for London Bridge Station
Sill Lighting's 453 and 460 series plane projectors have provided London Bridge Station with a new lighting scheme that has improved lighting levels and reduced energy consumption.

Network Rail wanted to replace the station's old light fittings as part of a platform refurbishment. The old fittings had reached the end of their life cycle and 'poor lighting' was cited as a major complaint about the station in a commuter survey carried out by Southern Rail. Lux levels were also too low in some areas for CCTV colour cameras to operate satisfactorily.

Sill's experience in railway lighting was instrumental in the company's specification – it was selected for its reputation and for its previous work on rail projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension and Stratford Terminal. As well as meeting Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate and other statutory requirements, quality, efficiency, reliability and longevity of fittings were high on Network Rail's requirements.

Nearly 170 fittings are used to relight platforms 9 to 16; Sixty 460 series projectors using 250w metal halide lamps at the Town End of the station and one hundred and five, 453 series projectors with 150w metal halide lamps at the Country End. The project achieves three and a half times the light level of the previous scheme whilst using 20% less fittings and only 60% of the energy load.

The Sill fittings were pre-mounted four to a pod, this being a bespoke chassis pre-assembled and pre-wired complete with all attachments for PA/VA and CCTV equipment. Each pod was finished and palletised at Sill for delivery right to where it was needed. The pods were then raised up, bolted on, wired into the existing cable systems and the luminaires simply unfolded ready for use, all making for a fast and cost effective installation with little disruption.
