New Flambeaux from Sugg Lights up the IoD
Sugg Lighting has supplied 20 heritage style gas-fired flambeaux to the Institute of Directors (IoD) in London, Mounting them to the original pedestals providing optimised performance and the latest flame control technology.

Located on Victorian pedestals, which were refurbished during the project, the flambeaux are sited outside the building in Pall Mall and Waterloo Place, providing an eye-catching display in the evenings. They are used mostly when the IoD is hosting evening functions, particularly at weekends.

"The original units would have had to be individually lit by hand and supervised all of the time they were on in case the flame was blown out by the wind," recalled assistant facilities manager Natalie O'Donnell. "With automatic ignition and flame failure control, the new flambeaux can be left unsupervised and even controlled by timer. This has resulted in higher safety levels, as well as considerable savings in overtime payments," she added.

The new flambeaux have cast fluted bowls and retain a heritage style while incorporating full electronic remote control. A multiple start facility facilitates lighting, even in extreme weather conditions, while the flame failure device will re-ignite the flame. Eight re-ignitions are attempted before the gas supply is automatically switched off in case in the interests of safety in the event of a fault.
