Jonathan Coles has been working in the field of architectural lighting and product design for over 25 years.

He explores the creative and practical use of light in any architectural setting.

Since setting up his own design studio Jonathan has established a reputation for delivering innovative, intelligent, creative and cost effective lighting schemes, with out comes ranging from boutique Hotels to light sculptures.

Recent projects include the Sushi restaurant Aaya in Brewer Street London to light projections at St Martin in the fields Church in Trafalgar Square.

Currently the studio is working on Hotel, Restaurant and residential projects in and outside the UK.

Process:

A lighting designer will listen to your desires and practical requirements for the space and then interpret them to a scheme that will be understood by yourself, the architect and the installation engineer.

Being involved from conception to completion enables us to integrate lighting into the architecture, to progress the scheme most cost effectively and to ensure the original vision is realised in construction. It is efficient to follow a project through formal stages, which can be signed off before constructing or installing and these are summarised as:

• Concept sketches - To be able to explain how I will light the project.
• Lighting layouts - High and low level plans with switching dimming zones.
• Architectural details - To explain how to construct the lighting features.
• Loading schedules - To enable selection dimmer and for cable sizes.
• Fixture Specifications - A book with visual and technical details.
• Fixture costing - So you will know we are keeping to the budget.
• Site Co-ordination - To ensure the design is maintained and resolve issues.
• Dimming - Setting up and programming dimming system.
• Handover - Checking the client is happy and providing lamp and as built data

A fee proposal is written after initial meetings with architect and client. Fees are charged per project stage per day, with scope and deliverables clearly defined.

The studio is based in central London where meetings can be held and lighting demonstrations arranged.

We continue to expand our portfolio of projects and clients in 2008 and can supply images or arrange a personal presentation.
