The winners of the world's foremost design competition the Red Dot Design Award will be announced shortly. One of the winning products is the luminaire Orosso from Fagerhult – which will then stand shoulder to shoulder with the elite of major international design companies.
Fagerhult presented Orosso, a new luminaire designed by industrial designer Olle Lundberg, at the Northern Light Fair in the beginning of February. Success was immediate – Orosso won the visitor's prize for the best luminaire four days in a row, similar success was also to be had at the Electrical and Lighting trade fair in Jyväskylä, Finland. Now Orosso has also taken home the Red Dot Design Award for innovative and distinctive product design. This nomination means Fagerhult now joins the exclusive group honoured with perhaps the world's most prestigious design award.
The 51st annual edition of the Red Dot Award, which takes place in Germany, has this time attracted a record number of participants. In total 2068 products from 41 different countries have been submitted for the competition. Winning an award is more than just honour – for many major, design orientated companies the Red Dot is an important indication of the global acceptability of their product; a method of safeguarding a best seller and strengthening the brand.
Orosso is one of the luminaires from Fagerhult's "Art of Light" concept where – based on the company's leading edge technologies and its wealth of knowledge of functional, comfortable and energy efficient lighting – some of the most exciting designers around have been given a free hand. In Orosso, Olle Lundberg has created a surprising meeting between two different light sources. By bringing together the circular T5-C light source and the more common straight T5 fluorescent lamp he has rewritten the rules for how a pendant luminaire may appear. The result is a unique luminaire full of life, which utilizes the light to the full to enhance the design encounter. With highly polished, specular metal sides Orosso reflects self-assurance both in itself and its surroundings.
Now it is not enough with just wilfulness to win an award such as the Red Dot. Creativity and a degree of innovation certainly form an important basis for the jury assessment – yet what separates the wheat from the chaff is the product's combined qualities and how well the design manages to mirror these.
'Red Dot confirms that we made the right decisions. Bold design in combination with advanced lighting technology produces products that are in demand,' says Fagerhult's marketing manager Thomas Hermansson.
'A high design content is a part of our trademark and this demands a comprehensive approach; we can not forgo functionality in favour of design or vice versa. Orosso is proof that perseverance does it!'
