The Art of Light

Light as an art form inspired Fagerhult Lighting to challenge a group of architects and industrial designers to push the boundaries of design and use light as the raw material to create an artistic range of new products. The introduction of these products: Wall and Orosso launch the "Art of Light" season at Fagerhult in their London Studio on the 6th April, where renowned light artist Jason Bruges is also featured talking about his work.

The "Art of Light" season will continue throughout the year with a series of talks exploring and celebrating the artistic disciplines that use, shape, manipulate and build with light. Light is always an inspiration behind artistic creativity.

Orosso is a suspended pendant luminaire with a difference. The industrial designer Olle Lundberg has created a functional and ergonomic fitting which provides diffuse indirect and direct light and also demands attention. The unusual nature of the luminaire resides not only in its shape but also in the combination of sources, both linear and circular T5: Olle found Orosso a challenge in many ways and adds "four light sources of two different types had to function together as one and highlight the shape of the luminaire, whilst also providing an even luminance across the entire surface. The trick is to use light in the design in such a way as to heighten the experience of the form".

Wall is designed by the architectural trio Claesson Koivisto Rune. The luminaire is designed with classic simplicity and the flexibility to respect and adapt to its environment, blending with any type of wall, old or new:
According to the trio: "Light as such, is one of architecture's absolute foundation stones. Wall is a range of luminaires in symbiosis with architecture .It must be easy for the architect to use- and not cry out for attention."

To achieve symbiosis with any kind of architecture, a complete series of wall luminaires is available in a range of designs and sizes. Wall 1 and 2 are indirect uplights designed for large and small areas respectively with a range of fluorescent and metal halide lamps. Haze is a version of Wall 1 constructed from a satin matt acrylic, with an opalic metallized acrylic reflector. This glows through the body and creates a unique lit effect.

The work of the first "ART of light" speaker, Jason Bruges comprises a mixture of art, design and technology using light and its interaction with other mediums: movement, wind, breath. Jason will talk about his projects from conception to completion with examples from pieces installed at venues including the Tate Britain, Puerta America Hotel and the Millennium Galleries.

The season will also include a talk about cinematography by David Knight, Lighting Cameraman and Lecturer for the London School of Radio, Film and TV and Ice Sculptor Lena Kristrom. Lena has created ice sculptures for the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden since it was first constructed in 1993. She will speak about her work with light and ice followed by a live ice sculpting demonstration.

There is also a photography exhibition planned later in the year and a series of regional events to launch 'Art of Light' in Scotland, commencing with a launch in Glasgow at the Lighthouse on the 18th May. The Manchester event will take place at Cube on the 25th May, with Birmingham and Bristol to be confirmed.
